Selective Service System Information and Updates
About
Under federal law, males are required to register when they turn 18 years of age. A man who fails to register with Selective Service becomes ineligible for various opportunities important to his future.
Registration is required to be eligible for state-funded student financial aid in many states, federal employment, many state government jobs, security clearance for contractors, job training under the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA), and U.S. citizenship for immigrant men.
The Selective Service System previously relied on receiving a significant portion of registrations through the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. To streamline and update the FASFA form, the Department of Education removed multiple sections of the form, including the opportunity to register with SSS. The unintended consequence of this action is that many students believe they are registered because this is the method their older siblings or parents used to meet the federal requirement. They only find out they have not when they apply for benefits requiring registration. The agency has been working with various organizations, agencies, and states to help spread the word and make access to registration easier. We are committed to making sure no young person is disadvantaged.
