U.S. Department of Labor Announces YouthBuild Funding Opportunity

On May 21, 2018, the U.S. Department of Labor announced $85 million in grants to support and expand YouthBuild programs across the country. YouthBuild, a pre-apprenticeship model, provides at-risk youth ages 16-24 with education and occupational skill development to obtain employment in construction and other in-demand industries.

Labor Department to connect young workers with paid construction internships. Youth ages 18 to 24 years old may be eligible for free training in the construction industry in a session beginning May 23, according to the Idaho Department of Labor.

Spartanburg YouthBuild program reconstructs broken dreams

Keyeria Ray was expelled from her high school, and since then, she has struggled to get back on track. That is until a program by the Spartanburg Housing Authority came to her rescue. It's called YouthBuild, and it is transforming the lives of youth ages 16 to 24 who did not finish high school. "There comes a time in life you have to change," said Ray. She's aiming toward getting her GED, going to college, and pursuing a nursing degree.

Habitat for Humanity teams with YouthBuild

Construction program for at-risk youth builds home for woman, sons Isabella Rodriguez stopped going to class regularly in middle school. Education was secondary to family drama, and things got worse when she started hanging out with the wrong crowd. Although she tried different programs to get back on track, none of them panned out. When the 22-year-old got involved with YouthBuild Vancouver, something finally clicked.

Jaquan “Jay” McGee has a mindset and a focus today that he didn’t have when he dropped out of high school a few years ago. A program launched by Goodwill Industries of Upstate/Midlands South Carolina has shown him that “giving up is not always the only option.” “You can really do anything you put your mind to. You’ve got to want to do it,” said McGee.

Ferguson Gets Federal Grant to Help Improve Youths' Lives

FERGUSON, MO (KTVI) – Scenes of civil unrest unfolding in Baltimore is well-known in the streets of Ferguson, have residents focusing on programs designed to move the city forward. One of those programs is being recognized by the federal government.  The program is not only about fun and games on the hardwood, but providing resources so young men won’t live a hard life.

Hope in Hertford: The impact of River City YouthBuild

By: Tim Longest I found hope for these youth in Hertford, a small town in the northeast corner of our state in Perquimans County. I went there to visit River City YouthBuild, a local chapter of a national organization that empowers economically disadvantaged young adults with education and job skills. They were in Hertford for a day of service in partnership with a local church to repair homes for people in need.

When he wasn’t studying for the high school diploma he’ll get next Friday, 17-year-old Alvaro Soria of Toppenish was helping build a home for Habitat for Humanity. The work is part of the YouthBuild program, which provides job training in construction for Lower Yakima Valley youths ages 16 to 24. For Soria, it’s one step toward his career goal: becoming an electrician after attending Perry Technical Institute.
